12 October 2001

Honorable Kofi Annan
Secretary General
United Nations
New York, NY 10017

Dear Mr. Secretary General,

On behalf of the entire Pugwash community in more than 50 countries, I would like to extend our congratulations to you and the United Nations for sharing the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Pugwash Conferences and the United Nations share many values and goals in common, from a desire to rid the world of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, to a belief in the need for true multilateral cooperation in meeting the security, economic and social challenges facing our world today.

Especially in light of the tragic events of September 11, these goals have become more important than ever. All of us associated with the Pugwash Conferences look forward to continuing to work with you and your colleagues at the UN during the difficult months and years ahead.

With all best wishes,

Sincerely,

George Rathjens
Secretary General
