MacArthur
Foundation Technology and Security Grants
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has recently awarded a number of grants to universities to build a community of science, technology and security specialists. The Foundation is reacting to the decline in the number of independent, qualified specialists conducting research and analysis on national security and defense policy in the US and elsewhere. The complete list of grantees is available on the Foundations website at www.macfound.org. Cornell University is among the grantees, and is advertising two positions that are relevant to members of the Pugwash community. The first is an open rank, tenure track position for a person with a doctoral degree in the physical or biological sciences whose research and teaching interests contribute to interdisciplinary work at the intersection of technology and security. There are also funds for a post-doctoral position for a person trained in the physical or biological sciences to pursue research related to science, technology and international security. Further details are available at the website of Cornells Peace Studies Program, www.einaudi.cornell.edu/PeaceProgram/news/index.asp?id=408 The University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) was notified by the National Science Foundation that it has been awarded a $ 2.91 million five-year Integrative Graduate Education Research and Training (IGERT) grant for its program, Public Policy and Nuclear Threats: Training the Next Generation. The competitive program will provide up to five years of fellowship support for two cohorts of Ph.D. students accepted to any UC Ph.D. program in 2003 and 2004.
