Pugwash USA
A b o u t U s
PUGWASH USA is the
US national group of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World
Affairs, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.
Beginning with its
first international conference in Pugwash, Nova Scotia in 1957, the
Pugwash Conferences have brought together influential scientists,
scholars and public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed
conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global problems. Pugwash
holds several workshops a year in areas such as nuclear weapons arms
control, biological and chemical weapons, regional conflict and stability,
humanitarian intervention and state sovereignty, and other topics.
Pugwash USA sponsors US
participants to attend these international workshops, occasionally hosts
Pugwash workshops and symposia, and currently supports the international
secretariat and Prof. Paolo Cotta-Ramusino, in Rome, Italy.
The co-chairs of
Pugwash USA are Dr. Lynn Eden (Stanford University) and Dr. Steven Miller
(Harvard University), and the Secretary is Dr. Jeffrey Boutwell.
