THE FRENCH PUGWASH GROUP

ABOUT US

Located in Paris, the French Pugwash group was created in 1964 under the name Association Française pour le Mouvement Pugwash. It is financed by yearly dues from its members and it has received occasional donations from foundations for specific workshops.

In the past, eminent members of the French scientific community have participated in its activities, namely Nobel Prize winners Alfred Kastler, André Lwoff and Georges Charpak, as well as Francis Perrin, Bernard Gregory, André Lacassagne, Bertrand Goldschmidt, Louis Leprince-Ringuet, and Herbert Marcovic. Distinguished members from the political and military community have also played an active part, namely Jules Moch, Etienne Bauer, Général Fricaud-Chagnaud, Léo Hamon, Jean Klein, and Raymond Aubrac.

Today, members of the scientific community, including political and military scientists, participate actively in the activities of the French Pugwash group, which organises regular meetings and workshops. It also hosts and participates in the meetings and workshops of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. In recent years, it has hosted the Pugwash workshop on Conventional Forces in Europe (XI) (Paris, October 1991), the Pugwash workshop on NATO Enlargement and Cost of European Security (Paris, May 1998) and the Pugwash workshop on The Prospects of Nuclear Energy (Paris, December 1998).

"Evening" meetings of the French Pugwash association are held in Paris , usually on the premises of Ecole Normale Supérieure, with a variety of distinguished guests. Topics encompass:

  • classical Pugwash themes on mass destruction weapons, or strategic confrontations, like the future of nuclear weapons, with RL Garwin, the Pakistan bomb, with Pervez Hoodbhoy, or Israel/Palestine/Jerusalem, with Jean-Christophe Victor,

  • timely debatess on world issues and conflicts , e.g. Sustainable Development with Robert Lion, follow up of the Johannesburg Conference by Michel Mousel, or " Anatomy of September 11: violence religion and ethics" with JP Dupuy

  • or assessments of long range developments, like the aftermath of Chernobyl, with R Masse, or fight against corruption, with Jean-Claude Paye.
