September 2004 Dear Friend of US Pugwash and the Pugwash Conferences, We are writing at a critical time in the world. Security challenges abound with the growing proliferation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Acute regional conflicts in the Middle East, South Asia, and the Korean peninsula could spark the devastating use of such weapons at any time; and the ongoing almost daily threats of international terrorism haunt our common societies. There is no question that the fundamental mission of Pugwash - to reach across national, political, and cultural divisions to bring together influential scientists and policy specialists to find ways of reducing and eliminating the risk posed by conflict, war and weapons of mass destruction - is as relevant today as ever. To that end, we hope you will join us by contributing to the Russell-Einstein Fund, a special fundraising effort to commemorate the approaching 50th anniversaries of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto in 1955 and the founding of Pugwash in 1957. With your support, Pugwash will further strengthen its involvement in precisely those regions where tensions could lead to open conflict and the possible use of nuclear weapons. Your contributions will go directly to supporting the participation in Pugwash of scientists and policy specialists from countries such as Pakistan and India, South and North Korea, and Israel, Iraq, and Iran, as Pugwash continues its mission of seeking peaceful solutions to regional conflicts. Based on 47 years of experience in building trust among those in conflict, and with more than 50 national groups around the world, including a new and rapidly growing national group in Iraq, Pugwash will continue this important work in the future.
